Part of the old grounds of the convent were developed during the 1990s under the auspices of the Horizon Employment Initiative of the European Union. The Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary had started Dove House, their Day Program and Sheltered Unit for the care and education of those of intellectual disability, in the old Vocational School building on the Mountrath road. In 1995 they moved to the new purpose built centre in the old convent garden with access provided from Upper Main Street. Associated with the centre is the Abbey Sensory Garden, elegantly designed for sensory stimulation and interest, and providing an oasis of peace and tranquillity for one and all. The Garden was officially opened iin 1997 by President Mary Robinson. A visit to Dove House and its gardens can be a most gratifying and inspirational experience at any time of year, but especially so during spring and summer when nature can be seen at its very best.
